A streak by definition can be defined as a brief run or stretch of good or bad luck; and/or an unbroken series of wins or losses. Heading into Saturday’s Subway Fresh Fit 150 at Canaan Fair Speedway Wayne Helliwell Jr. was a on a streak of three consecutive top 2 finishes in just as many starts in the familiar bright orange Bruce Bernhardt Ford Fusion [not counting a third place finish Friday night with the 350 Supermodified]. What’s more impressive about the two second place finishes and a victory in last weekend’s Spring Green 112 is they were not your normal Saturday night 35 lap features. These were full on 150 lap American Canadian Tour events. Saturday’s $5,000 to win unsanctioned event at Canaan fair Speedway would only add to the streak of an already impressive start to the 2012 race season.

Going into the fifth of the Amsoil Nelcar Legends Tour season at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, the last four races had produced four different winners. The pack has been getting tighter and tighter and that was never so evident as it was on the 1.6 mile road course. While the normal cast of characters, Shaun Buffington, Evan Beaulieu and Matt Bourgoine fought for the lead for much of the race, it was the young sophomore driver Reid Lanpher who was able to take the lead late, and pick up his first ever Legends Car win. The 24 car Legends field took to the track in what was going to become one of the wildest races of the season.

It all started per usual in qualifying, where Buffington was the fastest in the field. Bourgoine was able to get the second fastest lap and therefore would start on the outside of the front row on the start. On the start, Buffington was able to get the jump and the lead into turn one, with Bourgoine and Beaulieu right behind. Those three got away from the rest of the field for a bit as they ran each other hard for the race lead. Just as a battle was setting up once again for Beaulieu and Buffington for the lead, the races first yellow came out for Nick Ladyga finding the tire pile in turn three.

The Benjamin Motorsports team went into this past season looking to get a good finish after struggling a little at Beech Ridge. After being 2nd quick in practice the team was excited to get the racing underway.

In the qualifying race Travis started 6th and would be side by side with Ben Rowe for the win after just 12 laps but came up a foot or two short at the stripe and ended up second so that would start the number 17 AG New England, Shur Fine Ford Fusion car in 5th place.

Manchester, Maine – Four days after celebrating his 14th birthday, Reid Lanpher found himself celebrating again. This time it was in Victory Lane at NHMS after winning the NELCAR event on the road course. Lanpher qualified 6th in the 24 car field and was running 4th with 4 to go when a caution allowed the field to bunch up. After pushing defending series champion Evan Beaulieu to the lead. Lanpher was able to draft and slingshot by Beaulieu on the front stretch. They made slight contact as neither wanted to lift first as they shot into turn one. Lanpher made the move stick and lead back to the stripe only to have another yellow flag shown and line up for another restart.

Beaulieu was put back to the point and as the flag man indicated one to go, Lanpher could be seen tapping on his roof and gesturing NHMS Legend king Shaun Buffington to give him a push on the re-start. It was not needed as Lanpher again lifted late entering turn one and made it stick once again. This time is was for good despite a very hard charge by Beaulieu that got him to Lanphers bumper as the checkers waived. Lanpher is racing under the guidance of 4-time NELCAR champion Bob Weymouth who raced home to a 7th place finish.

Rusty Bryant scores first PASS Mod win

EPPING NH (5/12) Johnny Clark overcame mechanical problems and a shot gun starting position to win Saturday night’s Pro All Stars Series (PASS) North 150 at Epping New Hampshire’s Star Speedway. Clark gave race leader Travis Benjamin the bump and run on lap 144 and led the final six laps to capture his first win of the young season. Benjamin settled for second with Quebec racer Martin LaTulippe finished in third. Beech Ridge winner Joey Doiron raced under the checkers fourth and Ben Rowe was fifth.

Engine issues kept Clark out of the qualifying rounds but the defending series champ worked his way into the top five before the half way mark. Benjamin had taken over the top spot from Ben Rowe at lap 62 and it looked like he had the car to capture his first PASS super late model win since 2008. Clark took the lead on a lap 103 restart and held it until Benjamin reclaimed it under green on lap 126. Five laps later a power surge darkened the entire race track, setting up a red flag period that miraculously saw all competitors come to a safe stop. Once power was restored Benjamin held the point with Clark, Donnie Whitten and defending race winner Derek Ramstrom all giving chase .Ramstrom had gone from front to back several times and Whitten was about to make a charge at the lead but both made off track excursions in the closing laps, relegating Ramstrom to 13th and Whitten to 10trh at the stripe.
